Chapter 34 - Martin Luther's New Ideas /

Martin Luther's List /

When Spain西班牙/speɪn/ and Portugal葡萄牙/ˈpɔːrtʃʊɡəl/ started to send派遣,发送/send/ their ships船只/ʃɪps/ to West Africa西非/west ˈæfrɪkə/ and the Americas美洲/əˈmerɪkəz/, a new time in history历史/ˈhɪstəri/ began.
You will often hear this time called the Age of Discovery发现时代/eɪdʒ ʌv dɪˈskʌvəri/ or the Age of Exploration探索时代/eɪdʒ ʌv ˌekspləˈreɪʃən/. For the first time, countries国家/ˈkʌntriz/ such as Spain, Portugal, France法国/fræns/, and England英国/ˈɪŋɡlənd/ were not just trying to grow bigger by conquering征服/ˈkɒŋkərɪŋ/ the land next to their borders边界/ˈbɔːrdərz/.
Instead, they grew by planting colonies殖民地/ˈkɒləni/, new settlements定居点/ˈsetəlmənts/, in lands far away. While these European欧洲的/ˌjʊrəˈpiːən/ countries were expanding扩张/ɪkˈspændɪŋ/ their power力量,权力/ˈpaʊər/ into other parts of the world世界/wɜːrld/, the Catholic church天主教会/ˈkæθəlɪk tʃɜːrtʃ/ was trying to keep its power in Europe欧洲/ˈjʊrəp/.
For most of the Middle Ages中世纪/ˈmɪdəl eɪdʒɪz/, the Catholic church (the Christian基督教的/ˈkrɪstʃən/ church led by the pope教皇/poʊp/ in Rome罗马/roʊm/) was as powerful强大的/ˈpaʊərfəl/ as any country. The Catholic church had its own laws法律/lɔːz/ and its own citizens公民/ˈsɪtɪzənz/.
The pope could even tell kings国王/kɪŋz/ what to do, and often they obeyed服从/oʊˈbeɪd/ him. But as the Age of Exploration began, a monk修道士/mʌŋk/ named Martin Luther马丁·路德/ˈmɑːrtɪn ˈluːθər/ began to criticize批评/ˈkrɪtɪsaɪz/ the Catholic church.
Martin Luther grew up in the part of Europe that we now call Germany德国/ˈdʒɜːrməni/. His parents父母/ˈperənts/ wanted him to be a lawyer律师/ˈlɔːjər/, but Martin Luther decided to join a monastery修道院/ˈmɒnəsteri/ instead. As a monk, he had to beg乞讨/beɡ/ for food食物/fuːd/ and money金钱/ˈmʌni/.
He spent long hours praying祈祷/ˈpreɪɪŋ/ and studying学习/ˈstʌdiɪŋ/ the Bible圣经/ˈbaɪbəl/. Martin Luther chose this difficult困难的/ˈdɪfɪkəlt/, demanding苛刻的/dɪˈmændɪŋ/ life because he was afraid害怕/əˈfreɪd/ that God would punish惩罚/ˈpʌnɪʃ/ him for his sins罪恶/sɪnz/ unless he worked day and night to make God happy.
He wrote that he was "walled around with the terror恐惧/ˈterər/ and agony痛苦/ˈæɡəni/" of God's anger愤怒/ˈæŋɡər/. Martin Luther did everything that the church教会/tʃɜːrtʃ/ told him he should do. He went on pilgrimage朝圣/ˈpɪlɡrɪmɪdʒ/ to Rome.
He prayed in front of the relics圣物/ˈrelɪks/ of saints圣人/seɪnts/. He crawled爬行/krɔːld/ on his hands and knees, reciting背诵/rɪˈsaɪtɪŋ/ the Lord's Prayer, to show how sorry抱歉的/ˈsɔːri/ he was for his sins. But he was still afraid that God would be displeased不满的/dɪsˈpliːzd/ with him.
After he had been a monk for five years, Martin was sent to teach教学/tiːtʃ/ at a university大学/ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːrsəti/ in the German city of Wittenberg维滕贝格/ˈvɪtənbɜːrɡ/. He taught his students学生/ˈstuːdənts/ about the book of Romans罗马书/ˈroʊmənz/, in the New Testament新约/nuː ˈtestəmənt/.
He spent hours studying this book. And as he studied, he began to change改变/tʃeɪndʒ/ his mind about what God wanted from him. He thought to himself, "The book of Romans doesn't tell me that I have to earn赚得/ɜːrn/ God's love/lʌv/ by working hard to be good. No, no! It says that God gives me the power to believe相信/bɪˈliːv/ in him, and the power to be good, because he already已经/ɔːlˈredi/ loves me!"
This changed Martin's way of thinking about God! Later, he said, "It seemed to me as if I had been born出生/bɔːrn/ again, and as if I had entered paradise天堂/ˈpærədaɪs/ through newly opened doors."
Think about it this way: Imagine想象/ɪˈmædʒɪn/ that you have two aunts阿姨/ænts/. Both of them say that they love you. But the first aunt lives in a very clean干净的/kliːn/ house with a white rug地毯/rʌɡ/ on the floor. When you come to visit拜访/ˈvɪzɪt/ her, she opens the door and looks at you very carefully仔细地/ˈkerfəli/ to see if your hands and shoes and face are clean before she lets you in.
She invites邀请/ɪnˈvaɪts/ you to have hot chocolate巧克力/ˈtʃɔːklət/ and cookies饼干/ˈkʊkiz/ with her, but you have to sit on a white velvet天鹅绒/ˈvelvɪt/ couch while you eat. During your snack零食/snæk/, she keeps checking to see whether you are sitting straight直的/streɪt/ and chewing咀嚼/ˈtʃuːɪŋ/ with your mouth closed.
When you drip滴下/drɪp/ a little bit of hot chocolate on the sofa, she gets rubber gloves手套/ɡlʌvz/, a big bucket/ˈbʌkɪt/ of hot soapy water, and a sponge海绵/spʌndʒ/. She makes you scrub擦洗/skrʌb/ at the stain污渍/steɪn/, but it won't come off. So she shouts大喊/ʃaʊts/, "Leave this house at once, and don't come back until you learn how to eat neatly整洁地/ˈniːtli/!"
Now imagine that you go to see the second aunt. She throws用力打开/θroʊz/ her door open and says, "I'm so glad高兴的/ɡlæd/ to see you! Come in!" And she hugs拥抱/hʌɡz/ you even though you've been playing in the dirt泥土/dɜːrt/. You get a little bit of mud/mʌd/ on her apron围裙/ˈeɪprən/, but she dusts it off and says, "Why don't you wash/wɑːʃ/ your hands before you have a snack?"
The bathroom浴室/ˈbæθruːm/ has good smelling hand soap肥皂/soʊp/ and big blue towels毛巾/ˈtaʊəlz/ in it. After you wash your hands, she takes you into the kitchen厨房/ˈkɪtʃən/ and sits you down at a big wooden table桌子/ˈteɪbəl/ for your cookies and hot chocolate. When you spill/spɪl/ a little, she gives you a napkin餐巾纸/ˈnæpkɪn/ and says, "That's not the worst thing that's been spilt on this table!"
When your snack is done, she says, "Let's go upstairs and do some finger-painting手指画/ˈfɪŋɡər peɪntɪŋ/ in the playroom游戏室/ˈpleɪruːm/, and then you can have a bubble bath泡泡浴/ˈbʌbəl bæθ/ to wash off." Which aunt would you rather go see? The first aunt is a little bit like the way Martin Luther used to think of God. The second aunt is more like the way he learned to think about God after reading Romans.
When Martin Luther looked around, he saw that many other people also seemed to have the wrong ideas想法/aɪˈdiːəz/ about God. And he thought that the church's teachings教导/ˈtiːtʃɪŋz/ made these wrong ideas stronger. The Catholic church had begun to teach that God would only forgive原谅/fərˈɡɪv/ sins if the sinners罪人/ˈsɪnərz/ did penance忏悔/ˈpenəns/, special deeds (like giving money to the poor or confessing承认/kənˈfesɪŋ/ their sins in public) to show how sorry they were.
But the Church also taught that sinners could get out of doing penance by paying a certain amount of money to the Church. This practice was called selling indulgences赎罪券/ɪnˈdʌldʒənsɪz/. Martin Luther believed that indulgences were wrong. He preached布道/priːtʃt/ that God would forgive any sinner who believed in Jesus Christ耶稣基督/ˈdʒiːzəs kraɪst/, not just those who did penance or bought indulgences.
"Christ has nowhere commanded indulgences to be preached," he wrote. "Only the Gospel福音/ˈɡɑːspəl/!" So he made a list of ninety-five九十五/ˌnaɪnti ˈfaɪv/ reasons why indulgences were wrong. On October 31, 1517, Luther nailed钉上/neɪld/ a copy of this list, called the Ninety-five Theses九十五条论纲/ˌnaɪnti faɪv ˈθiːsiːz/, to the church door in Wittenberg.
This was his way of inviting邀请/ɪnˈvaɪtɪŋ/ other churchmen教会人员/ˈtʃɜːrtʃmən/ to argue争论/ˈɑːrɡjuː/ with him about his ideas. But Luther found that people all over Germany were interested感兴趣的/ˈɪntrəstɪd/ in his list. Soon, hundreds of people were discussing讨论/dɪˈskʌsɪŋ/ Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses.
For the first time, people were beginning to say out loud that the Catholic church might not always be right正确的/raɪt/ about God.

Henry VIII's Problem /

Over in England, the king of England was delighted高兴的/dɪˈlaɪtɪd/ to hear about Martin Luther's new ideas. Before you can understand why the English king was so happy about the Ninety-five Theses, you have to think for a moment about the history历史/ˈhɪstəri/ we've already read. When the princes王子/ˈprɪnsɪz/ in the Tower塔楼/ˈtaʊər/ disappeared, their uncle Richard理查德/ˈrɪtʃərd/ became the king of England.
But then Henry Tudor亨利·都铎/ˈhenri ˈtuːdər/ marched into England, killed Richard, and took the throne王位/θroʊn/ away. In 1485, he became Henry VII亨利七世/ˈhenri ˈsevənθ/, king of England. Henry VII had already fought a war战争/wɔːr/ to get England's throne. He didn't want another war to start after he died.
He wanted to make sure that his son and his grandson孙子/ˈɡrænsʌn/ and his great-grandson曾孙/ɡreɪt ˈɡrænsʌn/ would all inherit继承/ɪnˈherɪt/ the crown after him, peacefully and without any arguments争论/ˈɑːrɡjəmənts/. So when his oldest son, Arthur亚瑟/ˈɑːrθər/, was only two, Henry VII arranged安排/əˈreɪndʒd/ for him to get married to the three-year-old daughter of the king of Spain.
The two even had a wedding ceremony婚礼仪式/ˈwedɪŋ ˈserəmoʊni/, with grownups standing in for them (since the groom新郎/ɡruːm/ fell asleep and the bride新娘/braɪd/ was busy chewing on the hem下摆/hem/ of her dress). This was called a proxy wedding代理婚礼/ˈprɑːksi ˈwedɪŋ/. It meant that the two had to get married as soon as they were old enough.
When Arthur was fifteen and Catherine凯瑟琳/ˈkæθərɪn/ was sixteen, the prince and the princess had a real wedding. The young princess let down her hair, which came all the way to her feet, and danced with the prince. Everyone feasted宴会/fiːstɪd/ and sang songs and hoped that the two would have children right away. Arthur and Catherine went away to live in a castle城堡/ˈkæsəl/ of their own. But only six months later, Arthur came down with a high fever发烧/ˈfiːvər/—and died.
Now the heir继承人/er/ to the throne was Arthur's little brother, Harry哈里/ˈhæri/. Henry VII arranged for Catherine to get married again, this time to Harry. Because Catherine had been married to Harry's brother, they had to get special permission许可/pərˈmɪʃən/ from the pope to marry each other. When the pope agreed to give this special permission, Harry and Catherine got engaged订婚/ɪnˈɡeɪdʒd/.
But before the two could marry, Henry VII died. Harry became King Henry VIII亨利八世/ˈhenri ðə eɪtθ/ at the age of seventeen, in the year 1509. Two months later, he married Catherine. Now the two could have sons. The crown would pass peacefully on to a little boy who could become Henry IX亨利九世/ˈhenri ðə naɪnθ/.
The years went by. Catherine had a baby daughter named Mary玛丽/ˈmeri/, but little Henry IX never appeared. Henry VIII grew more and more worried. A girl couldn't inherit继承/ɪnˈherɪt/ his throne. He needed a son! When Catherine became too old to have any more children, Henry VIII was desperate绝望的/ˈdespərət/. What would he do?
He could only have a son now if he had another wife. He even picked out the wife he'd like to have—a beautiful young lady-in-waiting宫女/ˌleɪdi ɪn ˈweɪtɪŋ/ at the court, Anne Boleyn安妮·博林/æn ˈbʊlɪn/. But no one got divorced离婚/dɪˈvɔːrst/ back in those days, so Henry VIII could only marry Anne if Catherine died. And Catherine was perfectly healthy健康的/ˈhelθi/.
So Henry VIII thought of another solution解决办法/səˈluːʃən/. He had only been able to marry Catherine in the first place because the pope gave him special permission to marry his dead brother's wife. If the pope would only say that the special permission didn't count, he could act as though he and Catherine had never really been married.
But the pope put his foot down and refused拒绝/rɪˈfjuːzd/ to take his permission back. Henry and Catherine had been married for eighteen years. It was too late for Henry to announce宣布/əˈnaʊns/ that he'd never really been Catherine's husband. Nothing Henry could say would change the pope's mind.
So when Henry VIII heard the new ideas of Martin Luther, he was delighted. After all, Martin Luther said that the pope was wrong to allow indulgences. Henry was quick to agree. And then, Henry announced that if the pope was wrong about indulgences, he was just as likely to be wrong about Henry's marriage婚姻/ˈmærɪdʒ/. As a matter of fact, the pope might be wrong about all sorts of things.
So Henry declared that English Christians基督徒/ˈkrɪstʃənz/ no longer had to obey the pope. Instead, they had to obey Henry, who was not only the king of England, but also the Supreme Head最高领袖/səˈpriːm hed/ of the Church in England英国教会/tʃɜːrtʃ ɪn ˈɪŋɡlənd/. As the Supreme Head of the Church in England, Henry VIII decided that he could declare his own marriage over.
Naturally, the pope was furious愤怒的/ˈfjʊriəs/. But powerful English noblemen贵族/ˈnoʊbəlmən/ supported Henry. They didn't want to see another civil war内战/ˈsɪvəl wɔːr/ over the English throne. And they were willing to say that Henry was the head of the English church if that would get Henry an heir to the throne.
So Henry sent Catherine away and married Anne Boleyn. In order to get his way, he created a whole new church, the Church of England英国国教/tʃɜːrtʃ ʌv ˈɪŋɡlənd/. From now on, the Church of England would be separate分离的/ˈsepərət/ from the Catholic church of Rome.
Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII lived together happily—for a little while. Soon, Anne Boleyn had a baby. But her baby was a girl, named Elizabeth伊丽莎白/ɪˈlɪzəbəθ/. Now Henry had two daughters, but still no sons. He hoped that Anne would have a baby boy. But when she didn't, Henry had her head chopped off砍掉/tʃɑːpt ɔːf/.
Two weeks after Anne was beheaded被斩首/bɪˈhedɪd/, Henry married another girl, Jane Seymour简·西摩/dʒeɪn ˈsiːmɔːr/. A year and a half later, Jane Seymour had a little boy, named Edward爱德华/ˈedwərd/. Henry finally had his son! But he no longer had a wife. Jane Seymour died not long after her baby was born.
Henry VIII didn't mourn哀悼/mɔːrn/ his wife for very long before he decided to get married again. He sent artists艺术家/ˈɑːrtɪsts/ all around Europe to paint绘画/peɪnt/ the pictures of the princesses he might marry. When he saw the picture of a beautiful German princess named Anne of Cleves克利夫斯的安妮/æn ʌv kliːvz/, he pointed to it. "Bring me this woman!" he said. "I'll marry her!"
Anne of Cleves arrived in England on a cold, grey, winter day. Henry rushed out to meet her. But when he saw her, he realized that the painter had made her picture far too pretty. Anne was nothing like her portrait肖像/ˈpɔːrtrət/. "She looks like a horse/hɔːrs/!" Henry exclaimed.
But the wedding had already been planned. Henry was afraid that Anne's relatives亲属/ˈrelətɪvz/ would be angry with England if he didn't marry her, so he went through with the marriage. Afterwards, though, he announced that he would never live with her. Since he was the Supreme Head of the English church, he could declare that his own marriage was over—and he did. Anne left Henry's castle very happily. After all, Henry VIII wasn't exactly a handsome prince any more. He had gotten older, and he was extremely fat肥胖的/fæt/.
Three weeks later, Henry married a young girl named Catherine Howard凯瑟琳·霍华德/ˈkæθərɪn ˈhaʊərd/. Would you like to guess what happened to Catherine Howard? Henry had her beheaded too. Less than a year later, Henry VIII got married for the last time. Now he was an old man, and often sick. His new wife, Catherine Parr凯瑟琳·帕尔/ˈkæθərɪn pɑːr/, was a good nurse护士/nɜːrs/. She took care of him when he was ill, and watched over his three children. She was still alive when Henry VIII died.
Today, Henry VIII is best remembered for his six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. There's even a little verse诗句/vɜːrs/ to remind you what happened to each wife: Divorced, beheaded, died, Divorced, beheaded, survived.
