Chapter 23 - The First Russians /
The Rus Come to Constantinople /
Let's leave离开 - 动词,表示离开某地/liːv/ the Forbidden紫禁城,被禁止的/fərˈbɪdən/ City城市/ˈsɪti/ now and travel旅行/ˈtrævəl/ back west, to the great伟大的/ɡreɪt/ city of Constantinople君士坦丁堡/ˌkɒnstæntɪˈnoʊpəl/.
Constantinople君士坦丁堡/ˌkɒnstæntɪˈnoʊpəl/ was the capital首都/ˈkæpɪtəl/ of the Byzantine拜占庭的/ˈbɪzəntaɪn/ Empire帝国/ˈempaɪər/. (Remember, the Byzantine Empire was the eastern东部的/ˈiːstərn/ half一半/hæf/ of the old Roman罗马的/ˈroʊmən/ Empire.)
The emperor皇帝/ˈempərər/ of Byzantium lived居住/lɪvd/ in Constantinople. And whoever无论谁/huːˈevər/ conquered征服/ˈkɒŋkərd/ Constantinople could rule统治/ruːl/ the whole Byzantine Empire.
So Muslim穆斯林的/ˈmʌzlɪm/ warriors战士/ˈwɔːriərz/ tried尝试/traɪd/ to conquer Constantinople—and failed失败/feɪld/. Mongol蒙古的/ˈmɒŋɡəl/ warriors tried to conquer Constantinople—and failed. But now Constantinople would face面对/feɪs/ yet another attack攻击/əˈtæk/ from yet another band of warriors: the Rus罗斯人/rʌs/.
The Rus lived to the north北方/nɔːrθ/ of Constantinople, in the middle中部/ˈmɪdəl/ of the continent大陆/ˈkɒntɪnənt/ of Europe欧洲/ˈjʊərəp/. They were tall高大的/tɔːl/, blond金发的/blɒnd/, blue-eyed蓝眼睛的/bluː aɪd/ warriors, descendents后代/dɪˈsendənts/ of Viking维京人/ˈvaɪkɪŋ/ explorers探险者/ɪkˈsplɔːrərz/.
Back when the Vikings were invading入侵/ɪnˈveɪdɪŋ/ France and England, a Viking warrior战士/ˈwɔːriər/ named Rurik留里克/ˈruːrɪk/ wandered漫游/ˈwɒndərd/ into central Europe and decided决定/dɪˈsaɪdɪd/ to stay停留/steɪ/. He and his men settled定居/ˈsetəld/ down to rule over their own little kingdom王国/ˈkɪŋdəm/.
The people人民/ˈpiːpəl/ who already lived there, the Slavs斯拉夫人/slɑːvz/, had to obey服从/oʊˈbeɪ/ them. They called称呼/kɔːld/ these Viking invaders入侵者/ɪnˈveɪdərz/ the Rus, because "Rus" sounded听起来/saʊndɪd/ like Rurik's name.
The Vikings hadn't brought very many women女性/ˈwɪmɪn/ with them, so they married结婚/ˈmærid/ Slavs. The children孩子们/ˈtʃɪldrən/ and grandchildren孙子辈/ˈɡrændtʃɪldrən/ of the Vikings and Slavs formed their own tribes部落/traɪbz/, built their own cities城市/ˈsɪtiz/, and traded贸易/ˈtreɪdɪd/ with the other countries around them.
Soon the tribes of the Rus were becoming a powerful强大的/ˈpaʊərfəl/ people. The Rus were good sailors水手/ˈseɪlərz/, like their Viking forefathers祖先/ˈfɔːrfɑːðərz/, and often sailed航行/seɪld/ south down into the Black Sea黑海/blæk siː/ to trade with the city of Constantinople.
The Rus had ivory象牙/ˈaɪvəri/ tusks獠牙/tʌsks/ from walruses海象/ˈwɔːlrəsɪz/, honey蜂蜜/ˈhʌni/ and beeswax蜂蜡/ˈbiːzwæks/ from their own hives蜂巢/haɪvz/, nuts坚果/nʌts/ from their trees, and slaves奴隶/sleɪvz/ that they had taken captive俘虏/ˈkæptɪv/ in their battles with other countries.
They exchanged交换/ɪksˈtʃeɪndʒd/ these for silk丝绸/sɪlk/, glass玻璃/ɡlæs/, and silver银/ˈsɪlvər/ in Constantinople, which they called the "Great City伟大的城市/ɡreɪt ˈsɪti/."
But sailing to Constantinople was hard work艰苦的工作/hɑːrd wɜːrk/, even for the grandchildren of Vikings. The rivers河流/ˈrɪvərz/ leading to the Black Sea were full of rapids急流/ˈræpɪdz/ (shallow浅的/ˈʃæloʊ/ water水/ˈwɔːtər/, running over sharp尖锐的/ʃɑːrp/ rocks岩石/rɑːks/).
Sometimes, the rivers were so shallow that the Rus would have to pull拉/pʊl/ their ships船只/ʃɪps/ out of the water on giant log原木/lɔːɡ/ rollers滚筒/ˈroʊlərz/, roll滚动/roʊl/ the ships past the shallows浅滩/ˈʃæloʊz/, and then roll them back down into the river. Each trip旅程/trɪp/ to Constantinople took weeks星期/wiːks/—or months月份/mʌnθs/.
"You know," the Rus chieftains首领/ˈtʃiːftənz/ said to each other, "it would be a lot easier更容易/ˈiːziər/ to just conquer征服/ˈkɒŋkər/ Constantinople than to keep sailing down these shallow rivers." So they armed武装/ɑːrmd/ themselves with swords剑/sɔːrdz/, shields盾牌/ʃiːldz/, and spears长矛/spɪrz/, launched their ships in one huge war fleet战舰队/wɔːr fliːt/, and set off to attack the Great City.
Conquering Constantinople wouldn't be easy! The city was built on a little peninsula半岛/pəˈnɪnsjələ/, so that water surrounded包围/səˈraʊndɪd/ it on three sides. Three thick walls城墙/wɔːlz/ circled环绕/ˈsɜːrkəld/ the city, and between the walls and the edge of the sea was a moat护城河/moʊt/ sixty feet wide (as long as six or seven cars parked end to end).
On one side of the city, towers塔楼/ˈtaʊərz/ rose up the wall, so that archers弓箭手/ˈɑːrtʃərz/ could fire射击/ˈfaɪər/ out to sea. On the other side an enormous巨大的/ɪˈnɔːrməs/ chain链条/tʃeɪn/ was stretched拉伸/stretʃt/ across the water, between two towers, so that enemy敌人/ˈenəmi/ ships couldn't approach接近/əˈproʊtʃ/ the city's shore.
But the Rus were sure that they could conquer Constantinople. After all, they were Vikings! Sailing into battle战斗/ˈbætəl/ was what they did best. Meanwhile, the Byzantine army军队/ˈɑːrmi/ was preparing their secret weapon秘密武器/ˈsiːkrət ˈwepən/: Sea fire海火/siː ˈfaɪər/!
Sea fire was an oil油/ɔɪl/ that kept on burning燃烧/ˈbɜːrnɪŋ/ even when it was spread散布/spred/ out on water. When the Rus ships appeared on the horizon地平线/həˈraɪzən/, the defenders防御者/dɪˈfendərz/ of Constantinople threw this oil into the water and set it on fire—and the water itself burned.
The wooden木制的/ˈwʊdən/ ships of the Rus couldn't break through突破/breɪk θruː/ the sea fire. And so they had to leave离开/liːv/ Constantinople and sail back home. "The Greeks希腊人/ɡriːks/ possess something like the lightning闪电/ˈlaɪtnɪŋ/ in heaven!" they wrote in their histories历史记录/ˈhɪstəriz/. "They released释放/rɪˈliːst/ it and burned us. For this reason we did not conquer them."
Ivan the Great and Ivan the Terrible /
One of the strongest of the Rus princes王子/ˈprɪnsɪz/ decided that it would be better to make friends朋友/frends/ with Constantinople, rather than attacking the city again. This prince, named Vladimir弗拉基米尔/ˈvlædəmɪr/, sent the Byzantine emperor a peace和平/piːs/ present礼物/ˈprezənt/: Six thousand fierce凶猛的/fɪrs/ Rus warriors, who would fight for the Byzantine Empire.
The Byzantine emperor was delighted高兴的/dɪˈlaɪtɪd/ with his new army. He made them into his own personal bodyguard护卫队/ˈbɑːdiɡɑːrd/. From now on, the Rus would be the official guardians守护者/ˈɡɑːrdiənz/ of the Emperor. They were called the Varangian Guard瓦兰吉亚卫队/vəˈreɪndʒiən ɡɑːrd/. Soon they were known all over Byzantium for their ferocity凶猛/fəˈrɑːsəti/ and their strength力量/streŋθ/.
The emperor was so grateful感激的/ˈɡreɪtfəl/ that he promised the Rus free food食物/fuːd/, beds床位/bedz/, and baths洗澡/bæθs/ whenever they came to Constantinople to trade. Eventually Vladimir himself married结婚/ˈmærid/ a Byzantine princess公主/ˈprɪnsəs/—and was baptized受洗/ˈbæptaɪzd/ as an Eastern Orthodox东正教/ˈiːstərn ˈɔːrθədɑːks/ Christian基督徒/ˈkrɪstʃən/.
Many of his people followed him and became Eastern Orthodox Christians as well. Soon the country国家/ˈkʌntri/ of the Rus became known by their name. Today, we call this kingdom王国/ˈkɪŋdəm/ Russia俄国/ˈrʌʃə/, after the Rus.
In its early days, Russia (the land of the Rus) wasn't one country with one ruler统治者/ˈruːlər/. Instead, warrior princes ruled over several different不同的/ˈdɪfərənt/ Rus tribes. Vladimir was the prince of Kiev基辅/ˈkiːɛf/, but other strong Russian cities—like Moscow莫斯科/ˈmɑːskaʊ/—often fought战斗/fɔːt/ with him.
Before Russia could be a great country, the Russian cities would have to be joined联合/dʒɔɪnd/ together. The prince who finally brought the Russian cities together was named Ivan伊凡/ˈaɪvən/. He was a descendent后代/dɪˈsendənt/ of Rurik, the Viking invader who first settled in Russia.
Because he made Russia into one country, he is remembered as Ivan the Great伊凡大帝/ˈaɪvən ðə ɡreɪt/. But Ivan's grandson孙子/ˈɡrænsʌn/ wasn't so great. As a matter of fact, he was such a dreadful可怕的/ˈdredfəl/ ruler that he was called Ivan the Terrible伊凡雷帝/ˈaɪvən ðə ˈterəbəl/.
Ivan the Great was the prince of the Russian city of Moscow. When Ivan began to rule in Moscow, in the year 1462, his first task任务/tæsk/ was to get Moscow free from the local Mongol蒙古/ˈmɒŋɡəl/ kingdom. Remember: after Kublai Khan忽必烈汗/ˈkuːblaɪ kɑːn/ died, the enormous Mongol Empire broke up into smaller kingdoms ruled by the warlords军阀/ˈwɔːrlɔːrdz/ called khans汗/kɑːnz/.
One of these Mongol kingdoms claimed声称/kleɪmd/ part of the land of Russia. And the local Mongol khan demanded要求/dɪˈmændɪd/ that Ivan pay him tribute贡品/ˈtrɪbjuːt/—money to show that Ivan recognized承认/ˈrekəɡnaɪzd/ the Mongols as the true rulers of Russian land. When Ivan refused拒绝/rɪˈfjuːzd/ to pay the tribute, the Mongol khan sent a message信息/ˈmesɪdʒ/ saying, "Pay up, or I'll attack you!"
Ivan simply retorted反驳/rɪˈtɔːrtɪd/, "Go ahead!" So the khan assembled集合/əˈsembəld/ his army and marched行军/mɑːrtʃt/ up to Moscow's walls. Ivan gathered聚集/ˈɡæðərd/ his soldiers and got ready to fight back. And then the khan turned his men around and marched home. His army wasn't really strong enough to defeat击败/dɪˈfiːt/ Ivan's Russians.
He had been bluffing虚张声势/ˈblʌfɪŋ/, hoping that Ivan would pay tribute to avoid避免/əˈvɔɪd/ a fight. But the truth was that Ivan was more powerful than the Mongols. Now Moscow was free from Mongol rule. Ivan's next job was to conquer the other Russian cities and make them loyal忠诚的/ˈlɔɪəl/ to him.
He captured攻占/ˈkæptʃərd/ Kiev and the other large Russian cities, took their princes off their thrones王座/θroʊnz/, and replaced them with governors总督/ˈɡʌvərnərz/ who would be loyal to Ivan. He made Moscow the capital首都/ˈkæpɪtəl/ city of this new unified统一的/ˈjuːnɪfaɪd/ Russia.
An ancient fortress堡垒/ˈfɔːrtrəs/ called the Kremlin克里姆林宫/ˈkremlɪn/ lay at the center of Moscow; Ivan the Great built strong walls around the Kremlin and hired a famous architect建筑师/ˈɑːrkɪtekt/ to build beautiful cathedrals大教堂/kəˈθiːdrəlz/ inside it. He ran the country of Russia from his palace宫殿/ˈpæləs/ inside the Kremlin.
Today, Moscow is still the capital of Russia, and the Kremlin is still the center of the Russian government政府/ˈɡʌvərnmənt/. Ivan the Great was a good Russian king. But his grandson, Ivan the Terrible, became legendary传奇的/ˈledʒənderi/ for his wickedness邪恶/ˈwɪkɪdnəs/.
By the time Ivan the Terrible became king, the people of Moscow liked to call their city the Third Rome第三罗马/θɜːrd roʊm/—the most important city in the world after Rome itself and after Constantinople. And the ruler of this Third Rome was a powerful man! As a matter of fact, during the reign统治/reɪn/ of Ivan the Terrible's father, the leaders of Moscow announced, "By nature本质/ˈneɪtʃər/, the king is like any other man. But in power权力/ˈpaʊər/, he is like the highest God."
Ivan the Terrible took this power seriously. He called himself tsar沙皇/zɑːr/, which means "Caesar," to show that he was as powerful as the ancient Roman emperors皇帝/ˈempərərz/ had been. And at first, he used his power to make Russia stronger. But then Ivan's beloved心爱的/bɪˈlʌvd/ wife died. And after her death, Ivan began to go mad.
His hair头发/her/ and his beard胡须/bɪrd/ began to fall out脱落/fɔːl aʊt/. He accused指控/əˈkjuːzd/ his advisors顾问/ədˈvaɪzərz/ of treachery背叛/ˈtretʃəri/ and ordered them executed处决/ˈeksɪkjuːtɪd/. And he formed a special, secret band of police警察/pəˈliːs/ who were supposed to look out for anyone who might be plotting策划/ˈplɑːtɪŋ/ against the tsar.
These secret police rode black horses马/hɔːrsɪz/, with black saddles马鞍/ˈsædəlz/ and bridles马笼头/ˈbraɪdəlz/. Each carried a flag旗帜/flæɡ/ with a picture of a broom扫帚/bruːm/ and a dog's head on it, to show that they were pledged to sniff out嗅出/snɪf aʊt/ evildoers恶人/ˈiːvəlduːərz/ and sweep扫除/swiːp/ them away.
The secret police turned out to be the worst evildoers of all. They killed innocent无辜的/ˈɪnəsənt/ people, took land and houses from anyone they pleased, stole偷窃/stoʊl/ from stores, and burned down the homes of anyone who tried to oppose反对/əˈpoʊz/ them. Ivan himself sometimes joined in their crimes罪行/kraɪmz/.
If the secret police told him that a village村庄/ˈvɪlɪdʒ/ contained traitors叛徒/ˈtreɪtərz/, Ivan would order the entire village executed. And when the Eastern Orthodox Archbishop大主教/ˈɑːrtʃbɪʃəp/ scolded责骂/ˈskoʊldɪd/ Ivan for his cruelty残忍/ˈkruːəlti/, Ivan had his cathedral教堂/kəˈθiːdrəl/ looted抢劫/ˈluːtɪd/, stripped off the Archbishop's clothes, and sent him away in the snow.
The noblemen贵族/ˈnoʊbəlmən/ of Russia wanted Ivan's son, now a grown man, to become tsar in his father's place. But Ivan refused to give up his throne王座/θroʊn/. One day, he and his son began to argue争论/ˈɑːrɡjuː/ over the future of Russia. Ivan grew so angry that he struck out at his son with his staff权杖/stæf/, a heavy oak stick tipped with iron. The blow landed on the younger man's head—and killed him.
