Genghis Khan, Emperor of All Men / 成吉思汗,万人之皇
While Christian基督教的/ˈkrɪstʃən/ and Islamic伊斯兰教的/ɪzˈlæmɪk/ armies军队/ˈɑrmiz/ were fighting战斗/ˈfaɪtɪŋ/ with each other in the West西方/wɛst/, a different kind of battle战争/ˈbætəl/ was going on in the East东方/ist/.
The eastern kingdoms王国/ˈkɪŋdəmz/ of China中国/ˈtʃaɪnə/ and Japan日本/dʒəˈpæn/ didn't have to worry担心/ˈwʌri/ about invading入侵的/ɪnˈveɪdɪŋ/ Muslim穆斯林/ˈmʌzləm/ armies. But they did have to worry about the Mongols蒙古人/ˈmɔŋɡəlz/.
The Mongols came from the wild荒野的/waɪld/, cold寒冷的/koʊld/ mountains山脉/ˈmaʊntənz/ north of China. They lived居住/lɪvd/ in felt毡制的/fɛlt/ tents帐篷/tɛnts/ which they took down each morning早晨/ˈmɔrnɪŋ/, leaving nothing but the ashes灰烬/ˈæʃəz/ from their campfires篝火/ˈkæmpfaɪərz/ behind.
They were nomads游牧民/ˈnoʊmædz/ who swept席卷/swɛpt/ over the countryside乡村/ˈkʌntriˌsaɪd/, conquering征服/ˈkɔŋkərɪŋ/ and killing杀戮/ˈkɪlɪŋ/. The bone-chilling刺骨的/boʊn ˈtʃɪlɪŋ/ cold of the north didn't stop阻止/stɑp/ them; they wore furs毛皮/fɜrz/ and leather皮革/ˈlɛðər/ and rubbed their skin皮肤/skɪn/ with grease油脂/ɡris/ to keep the wind风/wɪnd/ away.
They never settled定居/ˈsɛtəld/ down and grew crops庄稼/krɑps/; instead they ate foxes狐狸/ˈfɑksəz/, rabbits兔子/ˈræbəts/, and other small wild creatures生物/ˈkritʃərz/. But they could go without food食物/fud/ for days at a time时间/taɪm/. If they were in danger危险/ˈdeɪndʒər/ of starving挨饿/ˈstɑrvɪŋ/, they would open the veins血管/veɪnz/ of their horses马/ˈhɔrsəz/, drink some blood血/blʌd/, and then close the vein and ride on.
The Mongol tribes部落/traɪbz/ raided袭击/ˈreɪdəd/ Chinese villages村庄/ˈvɪlɪdʒəz/ on the northern edge of China. They killed杀死/kɪld/ merchants商人/ˈmɜrtʃənts/ and stole偷窃/stoʊl/ their goods货物/ɡʊdz/. But they never tried to invade入侵/ɪnˈveɪd/ China itself—until Genghis Khan成吉思汗/ˈdʒɛŋɡəs kɑn/ became their leader领袖/ˈlidər/.
Genghis Khan was born around 1167, into a small Mongol tribe called the Yakka也客部/ˈjækə/. His father父亲/ˈfɑðər/ was the Yakka chieftain族长/ˈtʃiftən/, or khan汗/kɑn/. But the Yakka was only one of many Mongol clans氏族/klænz/. And the Mongols fought战斗/fɔt/ with each other as often as they fought with the Chinese.
Genghis Khan had a better idea想法/aɪˈdiə/. He thought认为/θɔt/ that the Mongols should all join联合/dʒɔɪn/ together and attack攻击/əˈtæk/ China. Just on the other side of the Great Wall长城/ɡreɪt wɔl/ lay the rich Chinese city城市/ˈsɪti/ of Beijing北京/beɪˈdʒɪŋ/, where people人们/ˈpipəl/ lived in warm houses房屋/ˈhaʊsəz/, heated by fires火焰/ˈfaɪərz/, with soft beds床铺/bɛdz/, plenty of food, and bags袋子/bæɡz/ of gold黄金/ɡoʊld/.
Genghis Khan wanted to conquer征服/ˈkɔŋkər/ this rich city. But first he had to convince说服/kənˈvɪns/ all the Mongol tribes to follow跟随/ˈfɑloʊ/ him. When his father died死亡/daɪd/, Genghis became leader of the Yakka. He set out at once to conquer the other Mongol clans as well.
He fought战斗/fɔt/ savagely野蛮地/ˈsævɪdʒli/ against them, forcing their leaders to swear发誓/swɛr/ allegiance忠诚/əˈlidʒəns/ to him. He promised承诺/ˈprɑməst/, "Anyone who doesn't follow me will be killed. I will flatten压平/ˈflætən/ his tent far into the ground地面/ɡraʊnd/, so that a horse galloping疾驰/ˈɡæləpɪŋ/ across it at midnight午夜/ˈmɪdnaɪt/ won't even stumble绊倒/ˈstʌmbəl/. The greatest joy喜悦/dʒɔɪ/ in my life is to kill my rivals敌手/ˈraɪvəlz/ and steal their possessions财产/pəˈzɛʃənz/!"
Would you surrender投降/səˈrɛndər/ to a man who talked like that? Most of the Mongols did. And those who didn't were killed. After Genghis Khan killed one rival leader, he moved his tent to cover覆盖/ˈkʌvər/ the body尸体/ˈbɑdi/. Then he ordered his servants仆人/ˈsɜrvənts/ to remove the body through the tent's smoke hole烟洞/smoʊk hoʊl/, late at night, while everyone was watching the front of the tent.
In the morning早晨/ˈmɔrnɪŋ/, he announced宣布/əˈnaʊnst/ that the gods神明/ɡɑdz/ had killed his rival and spirited带走/ˈspɪrətəd/ the body away as punishment惩罚/ˈpʌnɪʃmənt/ for defying违抗/dɪˈfaɪɪŋ/ Genghis Khan. After that, everyone followed Genghis.

Now it was time for Genghis Khan to lead the unified统一的/ˈjunəˌfaɪd/ Mongols against China. They swarmed蜂拥/swɔrmd/ down out of the north, destroying摧毁/dɪˈstrɔɪɪŋ/ every city they came across, leveling夷平/ˈlɛvəlɪŋ/ every building to the ground. They broke through the Great Wall, into China. And while King John约翰王/kɪŋ dʒɑn/ was signing the Magna Charta大宪章/ˈmæɡnə ˈkɑrtə/ over in England英格兰/ˈɪŋɡlənd/, Genghis Khan was conquering the city of Beijing.
But then Genghis Khan decided决定/dɪˈsaɪdəd/ to turn his armies to the West. He told his followers追随者/ˈfɑloʊərz/ that the sky-god天神/skaɪ ɡɑd/ Tengri腾格里/ˈtɛŋɡri/ had chosen选择/ˈtʃoʊzən/ them to conquer the earth大地/ɜrθ/. And then he led them against the frontiers边境/frʌnˈtɪrz/ of the Islamic empire.
No one could stop this horrific可怕的/həˈrɪfɪk/ invasion入侵/ɪnˈveɪʒən/! Genghis Khan and his Mongol horde部落大军/hɔrd/ seemed like the punishment of God. Muslims called him "The Scourge天谴/ðə skɜrdʒ/." He terrorized恐吓/ˈtɛrəˌraɪzd/ the western part of the Islamic empire for five years and conquered cities almost as far as the Caspian Sea里海/ˈkæspiən si/.
Villagers村民/ˈvɪlɪdʒərz/ were so frightened害怕/ˈfraɪtənd/ of him that when the Mongol warriors战士/ˈwɔriərz/ came into sight视线/saɪt/, they would lie down on their faces and surrender without even trying to fight. One Muslim historian历史学家/hɪˈstɔriən/, Ibn Athir伊本·阿西尔/ˈɪbən əˈθɪr/, tells this story about eighteen men who were riding along when a single Mongol horseman骑手/ˈhɔrsmən/ thundered雷鸣般冲来/ˈθʌndərd/ up.
"The Mongol told them to tie捆绑/taɪ/ each other up," Ibn Athir writes, "and so terrified恐惧/ˈtɛrəˌfaɪd/ were they that they began to do so. Then one of them said, 'There's only one of him and eighteen of us. Why don't we just kill him and go on our way?' But the other seventeen were too frightened. 'He will kill us if we defy违抗/dɪˈfaɪ/ him!' they wailed哀号/weɪld/, and went on tying each other up. So the eighteenth man rode up and knocked撞倒/nɑkt/ the Mongol off his horse. Then the other seventeen galloped疾驰/ˈɡæləpt/ away, crying, 'Allah preserve保护/prɪˈzɜrv/ us! A Mongol is here!'"
No wonder Genghis Khan conquered such a huge巨大的/hjudʒ/ empire帝国/ˈɛmpaɪər/. His enemies敌人/ˈɛnəmiz/ were too scared恐惧/skɛrd/ to fight back. Genghis Khan was still fighting when, sometime around 1227, he grew ill生病/ɪl/ and died. His people took him back to China to bury埋葬/ˈbɛri/ him. But they killed everyone who saw the funeral procession葬礼队伍/ˈfjunərəl prəˈsɛʃən/ pass by, so that no one would know where his grave坟墓/ɡreɪv/ was. Even today, no one has ever discovered the burial place埋葬地/ˈbɛriəl pleɪs/ of Genghis Khan.
The Mongol Conquest of China /
When Genghis Khan died, the Mongols ruled an enormous巨大的/ɪˈnɔrməs/ empire—and their kingdom王国/ˈkɪŋdəm/ soon expanded扩张/ɪkˈspændəd/ even more. The Mongols took land away from the Islamic empire. They conquered part of the Byzantine Empire拜占庭帝国/ˈbɪzənˌtin ˈɛmpaɪər/. Their kingdom stretched延伸/strɛtʃt/ from the Yellow Sea黄海/ˈjɛloʊ si/ to the west as far as the Mediterranean地中海/ˌmɛdətəˈreɪniən/.

When Genghis Khan's grandson孙子/ˈɡrænˌsʌn/ Kublai Khan忽必烈汗/ˈkublaɪ kɑn/ came to the throne王位/θroʊn/ in 1260, he completed what Genghis Khan had begun. He became the emperor皇帝/ˈɛmpərər/ of China. Kublai Khan already had control控制/kənˈtroʊl/ of the city of Beijing, which his grandfather Genghis had conquered. Now he began to fight his way to the south南方/saʊθ/.
It wasn't an easy fight. The Mongols were ferocious凶猛的/fəˈroʊʃəs/ warriors, but the Chinese were shrewd精明的/ʃrud/ and well-educated受过良好教育的/wɛl ˈɛdʒuˌkeɪtəd/. Their scientists科学家/ˈsaɪəntəsts/ had developed new weapons武器/ˈwɛpənz/ to defend against invasion入侵/ɪnˈveɪʒən/. They knew how to make poisonous有毒的/ˈpɔɪzənəs/ fogs雾气/fɔɡz/ which could be blown across a battlefield战场/ˈbætəlˌfild/: the "soul-hunting fog索魂雾/soʊl ˈhʌntɪŋ fɔɡ/," which had arsenic砷/ˈɑrsənɪk/ in it; the "five-league fog五里雾/faɪv liɡ fɔɡ/," made out of gunpowder火药/ˈɡʌnˌpaʊdər/, wolf dung狼粪/wʊlf dʌŋ/, and other strange ingredients成分/ɪnˈɡridiənts/; and the "magic smoke神奇烟雾/ˈmædʒɪk smoʊk/," powdered lime石灰/laɪm/ shot into the air to make a choking令人窒息的/ˈtʃoʊkɪŋ/ cloud云雾/klaʊd/.
But in the end, the Mongol fierceness凶猛/ˈfɪrsnəs/ defeated the Chinese wisdom智慧/ˈwɪzdəm/. Kublai Khan marched进军/mɑrtʃt/ into China and removed撤除/rɪˈmuvd/ the emperor from the throne. By the year 1279, he had become the undisputed无争议的/ˌʌndɪˈspjutəd/ ruler统治者/ˈrulər/ of China. And he founded a new dynasty王朝/ˈdaɪnəsti/—a Mongol dynasty, called the Yuan dynasty元朝/juɑn ˈdaɪnəsti/—to sit on the Chinese throne.
Kublai Khan lived in great luxury奢华/ˈlʌkʃəri/. He built a huge palace宫殿/ˈpæləs/ in the city of Beijing and hired ten thousand bodyguards保镖/ˈbɑdiˌɡɑrdz/ to protect him. Everyone who came into his palace had to take off his shoes鞋子/ʃuz/ to show humility谦卑/hjuˈmɪləti/ in the presence面前/ˈprɛzəns/ of the Khan. And whenever his officials官员/əˈfɪʃəlz/ called out "Bow down and worship崇拜/ˈwɜrʃəp/!" all of his visitors访客/ˈvɪzətərz/ would bow down until their foreheads前额/ˈfɔrˌhɛdz/ touched the floor.
Now that he was the emperor, Kublai Khan wanted to conquer the countries on China's coast海岸/koʊst/. Korea韩国/kəˈriə/, the small nation国家/ˈneɪʃən/ on China's east coast, was defeated击败/dɪˈfitəd/ at once. But when Kublai Khan attacked攻击/əˈtækt/ Japan, he met with his only big defeat失败/dɪˈfit/.
At first, Kublai Khan sent the Japanese a message信息/ˈmɛsɪdʒ/. "Surrender and your lives will be spared饶恕/spɛrd/!" he announced. But the Japanese refused拒绝/rɪˈfjuzd/ to surrender. So the Mongols built a fleet舰队/flit/ of warships战舰/ˈwɔrˌʃɪps/ and tried to sail航行/seɪl/ across the water to the coast of Japan. The Mongols didn't know much about fighting at sea海上/si/—but they never even got close to Japan. A huge wind blew up and forced the ships back towards the Chinese coast. Many of the Mongol warriors drowned溺水/draʊnd/. And the weakened Mongol army retreated撤退/rɪˈtritəd/ back into China to gather its strength力量/strɛŋθ/.
Seven years later, the Mongols returned with even more warships and a larger army. They sailed towards Japan and met the Japanese ships for a battle at sea. The battle raged激烈进行/reɪdʒd/ on and on. But just when the Mongol army seemed to be winning, another great wind howled呼啸/haʊld/ down on the Sea of Japan日本海/si ʌv dʒəˈpæn/. The Mongol ships were driven back towards China once more. Many sank沉没/sæŋk/. A storm风暴/stɔrm/ had saved Japan for the second time! The Japanese believed that the gods had sent these two storms. They called these storms kamikaze神风/ˌkæmɪˈkɑzi/, or "divine winds神圣之风/dɪˈvaɪn wɪndz/." A thousand years later, Japanese fighter pilots would remember these battles when they called themselves "kamikaze pilots神风飞行员/ˌkæmɪˈkɑzi ˈpaɪləts/" because they descended from the air to destroy their enemies.
Even though he never conquered Japan, Kublai Khan ruled over the largest empire in the world. For twenty-three years, he was the emperor of China and the Great Khan大汗/ɡreɪt kɑn/ of the Mongols. His name was feared恐惧/fɪrd/ throughout the entire world. But the Mongol empire didn't last. After Kublai Khan died, his relatives亲属/ˈrɛlətɪvz/ divided分割/dɪˈvaɪdəd/ his empire into small kingdoms, each one ruled by a minor chieftain族长/ˈtʃiftən/. In China, the dynasty Kublai Khan had founded grew weaker and weaker. Soon, Kublai Khan's descendents后裔/dɪˈsɛndənts/ lost the Chinese throne. The huge Mongol empire had been like a mushroom蘑菇/ˈmʌʃrum/ that springs up and grows to an enormous size overnight – and then fades away just as quickly. In all, the Mongol domination统治/ˌdɑməˈneɪʃən/ of the world lasted for less than a hundred years.
