Chapter 38 - The End of the Ancient Jewish Nation /
The Destruction of the Temple /
Earlier, we read about Jesus耶稣 - 基督教的创始人/ˈdʒiːzəs/, the founder创始人/ˈfaʊndər/ of Christianity基督教/ˌkrɪstʃiˈænəti/. The Romans put Jesus to death死亡/deθ/, because they were afraid害怕的/əˈfreɪd/ that the Jewish people would follow跟随/ˈfɒləʊ/ Jesus and obey服从/əˈbeɪ/ him, instead of obeying the rulers统治者/ˈruːlərz/ of Rome.
They were always worried担心的/ˈwʌrid/ that the countries国家/ˈkʌntriz/ Rome ruled would rebel反叛/rɪˈbel/ against the "First Citizen," who was now known as imperator皇帝(拉丁语)/ɪmˈperətər/, or "emperor皇帝/ˈempərər/." And the Jews hated痛恨/ˈheɪtɪd/ Roman rule. They wanted to be free自由的/friː/ again!
The Jews had been ruled by other countries for many years. Do you remember who was the father父亲/ˈfɑːðər/ of the Jewish people? Abraham亚伯拉罕 - 犹太人的祖先/ˈeɪbrəhæm/ left Haran哈兰 - 古代城市/ˈhɛərən/ and went to Canaan迦南 - 古代地区名/ˈkeɪnən/. There, he had a son儿子/sʌn/ named Isaac以撒 - 亚伯拉罕的儿子/ˈaɪzək/ and Isaac had a son named Jacob雅各 - 以撒的儿子/ˈdʒeɪkəb/.
And each one of Jacob's sons had a family家庭/ˈfæməli/ of their own. Now Abraham's family was as big大的/bɪɡ/ as a whole nation民族,国家/ˈneɪʃən/! And they were called "Israelites以色列人/ˈɪzriəlaɪts/" or "Jews犹太人/dʒuːz/."
Jacob loved his son Joseph约瑟 - 雅各最喜爱的儿子/ˈdʒoʊzəf/ more than his other sons. The other eleven brothers兄弟/ˈbrʌðərz/ were jealous嫉妒的/ˈdʒeləs/, and they sold卖掉/soʊld/ Joseph as a slave奴隶/sleɪv/. Joseph was taken to Egypt埃及/ˈiːdʒɪpt/, and soon the rest of the Israelites came down to join him, because a famine饥荒/ˈfæmɪn/ had wiped out all their crops—and there was only grain谷物/ɡreɪn/ in Egypt.
The Israelites lived in Egypt for a long time. But the pharaoh法老/ˈfeəroʊ/ made them into slaves奴隶/sleɪvz/, until Moses摩西 - 以色列人的领袖/ˈmoʊzɪz/ came along and led them out of Egypt, back up to Canaan. The Israelites lived in Canaan until the Assyrians亚述人/əˈsɪriənz/ came along, captured俘虏/ˈkæptʃərd/ them, and took them away, back to Assyria亚述/əˈsɪriə/.
The Assyrians were then conquered征服/ˈkɑːŋkərd/ by the Babylonians巴比伦人/ˌbæbɪˈloʊniənz/—who took the Israelites from Assyria and moved them to Babylon巴比伦/ˈbæbɪlən/. Then the good king国王/kɪŋ/ of Persia and Babylon, Cyrus the Great居鲁士大帝/ˈsaɪrəs/, gave the Jews permission许可/pərˈmɪʃən/ to move back to their own land土地/lænd/—back to Canaan.
The Jews had been moved around the ancient古代的/ˈeɪnʃənt/ world for hundreds数百/ˈhʌndrədz/ of years. After Cyrus allowed them to go home家/hoʊm/, they hoped that they would finally get to stay in their own country国家/ˈkʌntri/ and live in peace和平/piːs/.
But now they were being ruled by Rome. The Romans were telling them what to do. The Romans were forcing them to pay high taxes税收/ˈtæksɪz/. Finally, the Jews refused拒绝/rɪˈfjuːzd/ to obey any longer. They set fire火/ˈfaɪər/ to the house房子/haʊs/ of the Roman ruler of Judea犹地亚/dʒuˈdiːə/. Armed武装的/ɑːrmd/ groups of Jewish men attacked攻击/əˈtækt/ Roman soldiers士兵/ˈsoʊldʒərz/. Fighting between the Jews and the Romans in Jerusalem耶路撒冷/dʒəˈruːsələm/ grew worse and worse.
When the emperor皇帝/ˈempərər/ in Rome heard what was happening, he sent more Roman soldiers with orders命令/ˈɔːrdərz/ to destroy摧毁/dɪˈstrɔɪ/ Jerusalem, the capital首都/ˈkæpɪtəl/ city of the Jews. Jerusalem was an important重要的/ɪmˈpɔːrtənt/ city to the Jews. Inside the city was the Temple圣殿/ˈtempəl/, the place where they worshipped崇拜/ˈwɜːrʃɪpt/ God.
But when the Roman soldiers attacked, they burned烧毁/bɜːrnd/ down the Temple. Inside the temple庙宇/ˈtempəl/ were many beautiful decorations装饰品/ˌdekəˈreɪʃənz/ made of gold金子/ɡoʊld/ and silver银子/ˈsɪlvər/. One ancient古代的/ˈeɪnʃənt/ historian历史学家/hɪˈstɔːriən/ writes that, when the Temple burned down, the gold and silver melted融化/ˈmeltɪd/ and ran into the cracks裂缝/kræks/ between the huge stones石头/stoʊnz/ of the Temple's foundation地基/faʊnˈdeɪʃən/.
The Roman soldiers, anxious急切的/ˈæŋkʃəs/ to get at this wealth财富/welθ/, pried撬开/praɪd/ the stones apart with crowbars撬棍/ˈkroʊbɑːrz/. This completely destroyed the Temple, all the way down to its foundation. And then the Romans drove驱赶/droʊv/ the Jewish people away from Jerusalem.
Now the Jews had no Temple to worship God in, no capital city, and no country of their own. They were scattered散布/ˈskætərd/ throughout all the countries of the ancient world. The Jews didn't return返回/rɪˈtɜːrn/ to the land of Canaan until just a few years ago.
