Chapter 23: The Greek Gods /

The Golden Apple /

The ancient古代的/ˈeɪnʃənt/ Greeks may have lived in very different ways方式/weɪz/, but they all spoke the same language语言/ˈlæŋɡwɪdʒ/Greek希腊语/ɡriːk/. And they all worshipped崇拜/ˈwɜːrʃɪpt/ the same gods神灵/ɡɒdz/.
The Greeks were polytheists多神教徒/ˈpɒliθiːɪsts/. Remember: Polytheists believed相信/bɪˈliːvd/ in many gods. Monotheists一神教徒/ˈmɒnəʊθiːɪsts/, like the Jews, only believed in one god.
The Greeks believed in a whole family家族/ˈfæməli/ of gods. They thought that these gods lived up on the top of Mount Olympus奥林匹斯山/maʊnt əˈlɪmpəs/, the highest mountain山峰/ˈmaʊntɪn/ in Greece. And they also thought that the gods were very interested感兴趣的/ˈɪntrəstɪd/ in what men were doing.
Sometimes the Greek gods were kind善良的/kaɪnd/ and helpful有帮助的/ˈhelpfəl/ to men. But at other times, they were cruel残忍的/kruːəl/. As a matter of fact, the chief首领/tʃiːf/ god of the Greeks, Zeus宙斯/zuːs/, started a horrible war战争/wɔːr/ down on earth:
Zeus sat on the top of Mount Olympus and looked down over Greece. All over the countryside乡村/ˈkʌntrisaɪd/, he could see men, swarming群集/ˈswɔːrmɪŋ/ like ants. Men cutting down trees树木/triːz/, men building houses房屋/ˈhaʊzɪz/ all over the beautiful green fields田野/fiːldz/, men pulling fish/fɪʃ/ out of the sea.
Men killing deer鹿/dɪər/ for food, shooting birds鸟类/bɜːrdz/ for fun, and blocking up streams小溪/striːmz/ for water. Zeus sighed. "There are too many people人们/ˈpiːpəl/ on the earth," he said gloomily忧郁地/ˈɡluːməli/. "I should get rid of some of them."
He thought and thought. And finally he came up with a plan计划/plæn/. He knew that the gods were all going to a big wedding婚礼/ˈwedɪŋ/, and that it would be the perfect time to start a fight. So he made a golden金色的/ˈɡoʊldən/ apple苹果/ˈæpəl/, so beautiful that it made the sun look dim, and wrote around the top, "For the Most Beautiful."
Then he called Eris厄里斯/ˈɪrɪs/, the goddess女神/ˈɡɒdes/ of strife争斗/straɪf/. "Here," he said, "take this apple to the wedding, and drop it on the floor in front of my wife妻子/waɪf/ Hera赫拉/ˈhɪrə/."
Eris liked to cause trouble麻烦/ˈtrʌbəl/. So she took the apple to the wedding, and waited until Hera and two other goddesses were standing next to each other, chatting聊天/ˈtʃætɪŋ/. Then she rolled the apple over to Hera. It bumped against Hera's toes, and she picked it up.
"For the Most Beautiful!" she read. "Why, thank you! That's obviously me!" But the two goddesses with her disagreed. Aphrodite阿芙罗狄蒂/æfrəˈdaɪti/, the goddess of love爱情/lʌv/, twirled her shining golden金色的/ˈɡoʊldən/ hair头发/hɛr/ around one hand and blinked her huge blue eyes眼睛/aɪz/.
"Hera, my dear," she said sweetly, "I think the apple must be for me." "Oh, no," put in Athena雅典娜/əˈθiːnə/, the goddess of war. She reached for the apple. "The apple is obviously for me." "No!" Hera snapped, clutching the apple. "It's mine!"
The wedding guests客人/ɡɛsts/ all started to argue争论/ˈɑːrɡjuː/ about which of the goddesses was the most beautiful. But then Hera said, "I know. Let's ask my husband丈夫/ˈhʌzbənd/ to judge判断/dʒʌdʒ/ which of us deserves the apple. After all, he is the chief of the gods."
Zeus was standing innocently by the punch bowl. "What?" he said. "How can I judge my own wife? No, no. You must ask a mortal凡人/ˈmɔːrtəl/ man to judge you. Ask Paris帕里斯/ˈpærɪs/, the prince王子/prɪns/ of Troy. He's the handsomest man on earth, so surely he can decide who is most beautiful among the goddesses."
Paris was lying happily on a mountainside山坡/ˈmaʊntənsaɪd/, staring at the sky without a care in the world, when the three goddesses suddenly appeared in front of him with the apple in hand. They demanded that he judge them. Which was the most beautiful?
"Hmm," Paris said, wondering whether one of them would strike him dead if he chose the wrong goddess. "Well, let me see…" "Pick me," whispered Hera, "and I'll make you the king国王/kɪŋ/ of the whole world of men." "Really?" Paris said.
"No, no," hissed Athena. "Pick me, and I'll give you victory胜利/ˈvɪktəri/ in every battle战斗/ˈbætəl/ you ever fight!" "That would be wonderful!" Paris said. "Wait!" said Aphrodite. "Pick me, Paris, and I will give you the most beautiful woman女人/ˈwʊmən/ on earth."
Paris's eyes lit up. "That's what I want!" he said, and gave the apple to Aphrodite. Aphrodite went back to Mount Olympus, with Hera and Athena behind her, grumbling and complaining. There, Aphrodite made Helen海伦/ˈhɛlən/, the most beautiful woman in the world, fall in love with Paris.
As soon as she saw him, she was his forever. And she ran away to live with him in Troy. Unfortunately, Helen was already married—to Menelaus墨涅劳斯/ˌmɛnəˈleɪəs/, the king of the Greeks! Menelaus was furious愤怒的/ˈfjʊriəs/. And he called on the gods to help him fight against Troy, defeat击败/dɪˈfiːt/ Paris, and get his wife back.
Hera was still angry with Paris, so she chose to fight against Troy. Aphrodite was on Troy's side. The sun god decided to be on Troy's side as well. Poseidon波塞冬/pəˈsaɪdən/, the god of the sea, wanted to see Troy destroyed. And so it went; all of the gods lined up for or against Troy, as the Greeks sailed to attack it.
And so the Trojan War特洛伊战争/ˈtroʊdʒən wɔːr/ began, and lasted for years and years of bloodshed流血/ˈblʌdʃed/ and death—all because of Zeus and his golden apple.
