Chapter 28 - The Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal /

Ferdinand and Isabella Unite Spain /

Now let's leave离开/liːv/ England and travel旅行/ˈtrævəl/ back over into Europe. Go across the English Channel英吉利海峡/ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ ˈtʃænəl/, the water水域/ˈwɔːtər/ on England's southern side (remember that south南方/saʊθ/ is down on your map). You'll find yourself in France法国/fræns/, the country国家/ˈkʌntri/ that fought with England in the Hundred Years' War. Now go southwest西南方/saʊθˈwest/ (down and to the left) and you'll cross over into another powerful强大的/ˈpaʊərfəl/ country: Spain.
We've already read about the Reconquest收复失地运动/riːˈkɒŋkwest/ of Spain, when the Christian基督教的/ˈkrɪstʃən/ kingdoms王国/ˈkɪŋdəmz/ of Spain conquered征服/ˈkɒŋkərd/ the land that had been ruled统治/ruːld/ by Muslims穆斯林/ˈmʌzləmz/ for hundreds of years. The Reconquest was carried out by small, divided分裂的/dɪˈvaɪdɪd/ Christian kingdoms all over Spain. But as time went on, these small kingdoms joined together联合/dʒɔɪnd təˈɡeðər/. Two large and powerful kingdoms called Aragon阿拉贡/ˈærəɡən/ and Castile卡斯蒂利亚/kæˈstiːl/ grew to cover most of Spain. A third, smaller kingdom, Portugal葡萄牙/ˈpɔːrtʃəɡəl/, lay on the western coast of Spain.
The king国王/kɪŋ/ of Castile, Enrique恩里克/enˈriːke/, was a young man with big ambitions野心/æmˈbɪʃənz/. He wanted to make Castile into the greatest kingdom of Spain. But to do this, he needed more soldiers士兵/ˈsoʊldʒərz/ for his army军队/ˈɑːrmi/. So he promised承诺/ˈprɒmɪst/ one of his noblemen贵族/ˈnoʊbəlmən/, a famous fighter战士/ˈfaɪtər/ named Pedro Giron佩德罗·希龙/ˈpeɪdroʊ ˈhiːrɒn/, his sister Isabella伊莎贝拉/ˌɪzəˈbelə/ in marriage婚姻/ˈmærɪdʒ/—in exchange for plenty of soldiers who would make Enrique's army stronger.
Pedro Giron was delighted高兴的/dɪˈlaɪtɪd/ by this offer. He could become the king's brother-in-law姐夫/ˈbrʌðər ɪn lɔː/ by marrying the Castilian princess公主/ˈprɪnsɪs/! But Isabella was horrified惊恐的/ˈhɔːrɪfaɪd/. She was only thirteen years old十三岁/θɜːˈtiːn jɪrz oʊld/; Pedro Giron was over forty四十/ˈfɔːrti/. And he was a scoundrel无赖/ˈskaʊndrəl/ with a reputation名声/ˌrepjəˈteɪʃən/ for drinking酗酒/ˈdrɪŋkɪŋ/, quarrelling争吵/ˈkwɔːrəlɪŋ/, and killing杀戮/ˈkɪlɪŋ/. She begged恳求/beɡd/ her brother to call off the marriage, but he refused.
A great wedding feast婚礼盛宴/ˈwedɪŋ fiːst/ was planned. Soon the castle城堡/ˈkæsəl/ was full of cooking烹饪/ˈkʊkɪŋ/, sewing缝纫/ˈsoʊɪŋ/, and baking烘焙/ˈbeɪkɪŋ/. But Isabella went weeping哭泣/ˈwiːpɪŋ/ in her room, praying祈祷/ˈpreɪɪŋ/ that something would prevent阻止/prɪˈvent/ this horrible marriage.
Pedro Giron set out for his wedding in a fine mood, boasting吹嘘/ˈboʊstɪŋ/ about his great match匹配/mætʃ/. But on the journey旅程/ˈdʒɜːrni/, he began to feel sick生病/sɪk/. Before he could reach Isabella's castle, he died of stomach pains胃痛/ˈstʌmək peɪnz/. Isabella was filled with joy喜悦/dʒɔɪ/—and relief解脱/rɪˈliːf/!
But her relief didn't last long. Four years later, her brother decided that she should marry the king of Portugal, so that Portugal and Castile could be united联合/juˈnaɪtɪd/ into one stronger kingdom. The king of Portugal was a fat肥胖的/fæt/, wheezing喘息的/ˈhwiːzɪŋ/ man, old enough to be Isabella's father父亲/ˈfɑːðər/.
Once again, Isabella begged her brother to change his mind. But once again he refused. "You'll marry the king of Portugal whether you like it or not!" he told her. So Isabella sent a secret message秘密信息/ˈsiːkrət ˈmesɪdʒ/ to Ferdinand费迪南/ˈfɜːrdɪnænd/, the young prince王子/prɪns/ of the kingdom of Aragon. She had never met Ferdinand, but he was just her own age, and she had heard that he was handsome英俊的/ˈhænsəm/, courteous有礼貌的/ˈkɜːrtiəs/, and gentlemanlike绅士般的/ˈdʒentəlmənlaɪk/.
"My brother is determined决心的/dɪˈtɜːrmɪnd/ to make a great match for me," she wrote to him. "I won't marry the king of Portugal, but you are as good a match as that old man. Meet me at a secret place in Castile, and decide whether you will marry me instead." Ferdinand agreed. But he didn't want Enrique to know that he was coming to Castile. So he collected six of his knights骑士/naɪts/ together and told them to dress up装扮/dres ʌp/ like merchants商人/ˈmɜːrtʃənts/ in a trading caravan商队/ˈkærəvæn/. Ferdinand put on rags破布/ræɡz/ and pretended to be their servant仆人/ˈsɜːrvənt/ and donkey-tender驴夫/ˈdʌŋki tendər/.
Meanwhile, Isabella crept out悄悄溜出/krept aʊt/ of her room in the middle of the night, stole/stoʊl/ a horse/hɔːrs/ from her brother's stables马厩/ˈsteɪbəlz/, and galloped away疾驰而去/ˈɡæləpt əˈweɪ/ on horseback. When the two met at the secret rendezvous约会地点/ˈrɑːndɪvuː/, they talked for two hours—and decided to get married right away. Four days later, they were husband and wife.
Isabella's brother Enrique was furious愤怒的/ˈfjʊriəs/. But when he died, six years later, Isabella became the queen女王/kwiːn/ of Castile. And when Ferdinand inherited继承/ɪnˈherɪtɪd/ the throne王位/θroʊn/ of Aragon, Isabella and Ferdinand combined结合/kəmˈbaɪnd/ their two kingdoms together into one large kingdom of Spain.
Ferdinand and Isabella decided that they would finish the job of unifying统一/ˈjuːnɪfaɪɪŋ/ Spain by conquering the very last bit of Spain still under Muslim rule. This last Muslim stronghold据点/ˈstrɔːŋhoʊld/ was a small, mountainous多山的/ˈmaʊntənəs/ southern kingdom named Granada格拉纳达/ɡrəˈnɑːdə/, where a Muslim king ruled over his subjects臣民/ˈsʌbdʒɪkts/ from a castle called Alhambra阿尔罕布拉/ælˈhæmbrə/. For ten years, Ferdinand and Isabella battered away持续攻击/ˈbætərd əˈweɪ/ at Granada.
Ferdinand himself led the army into battle. Isabella traveled all around Castile on horseback, begging恳求/ˈbeɡɪŋ/ the men of Spain to join the army and fight. Finally, in 1491, the Spanish armies were victorious胜利的/vɪkˈtɔːriəs/. The Muslim king of Granada surrendered投降/səˈrendərd/ the castle of Alhambra and fled逃跑/fled/. According to legend传说/ˈledʒənd/, he turned around, as he trudged跋涉/trʌdʒd/ out of Granada, and sighed叹息/saɪd/ over the last view of his lost kingdom.
But his mother, who was walking along behind him (and who was very angry over losing her home) snapped, "Don't weep哭泣/wiːp/ like a woman over what you couldn't defend保卫/dɪˈfend/ like a man!" The place where the king stopped to sigh is still called The Last Sigh of the Moor摩尔人的最后叹息/ðə læst saɪ ʌv ðə mʊr/.
The Last Sigh of the Moor - 历史地名
Now that Granada was theirs, Ferdinand and Isabella declared all of Spain to be a Christian kingdom基督教王国/ˈkrɪstʃən ˈkɪŋdəm/. They made it illegal非法的/ɪˈliːɡəl/ to practice any other religion宗教/rɪˈlɪdʒən/ in Spain. The Jews犹太人/dʒuːz/ who lived in Spain were forced to leave被迫离开/fɔːrst tu liːv/. And almost every Spanish village村庄/ˈvɪlɪdʒ/ had Jewish families家庭/ˈfæməliz/ in it. They sold their homes, often for mere pennies便士/ˈpeniz/, and set out from Spain in overcrowded ships拥挤的船只/ˌoʊvərˈkraʊdɪd ʃɪps/. Many died in the long, dangerous journey危险的旅程/ˈdeɪndʒərəs ˈdʒɜːrni/ out of Spain.
Although Ferdinand and Isabella were good rulers统治者/ˈruːlərz/ in many ways, they are also remembered for this unjust act不公正行为/ʌnˈdʒʌst ækt/. They brought all of Spain together into one country—but they also forced the Jews in Spain to leave their homes forever永远/fərˈevər/.

Henry the Navigator, Prince of Portugal /

Ferdinand and Isabella drew Castile, Aragon, and Granada together into one Spanish kingdom. But Portugal, the kingdom on Spain's western coast, kept its independence独立/ˌɪndɪˈpendəns/ from the rest of Spain. Portugal was a small kingdom, not much wider than the state of Florida佛罗里达/ˈflɔːrɪdə/. It had a long coast海岸/koʊst/ with many beaches海滩/ˈbiːtʃɪz/ and harbors港口/ˈhɑːrbərz/. Wildcats野猫/ˈwaɪldkæts/ and wild pigs野猪/waɪld pɪɡz/ roamed the countryside乡村/ˈkʌntrisaɪd/. Eagles/ˈiːɡəlz/ and falcons/ˈfælkənz/ soared overhead; flamingos火烈鸟/fləˈmɪŋɡoʊz/ stood in the marshes沼泽/ˈmɑːrʃɪz/ at the water's edge.
The Portuguese were known for their grapes葡萄/ɡreɪps/, their olives橄榄/ˈɑːlɪvz/—and their tripe牛肚/traɪp/. Tripe was a medieval中世纪的/ˌmediˈiːvəl/ dish made of the lining of cows' stomachs牛胃壁/ˈlaɪnɪŋ ʌv kaʊz ˈstʌməks/, cooked together with calves' feet小牛脚/kævz fiːt/, onions洋葱/ˈʌnjənz/, cow fat牛脂/kaʊ fæt/, and fermented apple cider苹果酒/ˈæpəl ˈsaɪdər/. The Portuguese thought tripe was one of the greatest delicacies美食/ˈdelɪkəsiz/ in the world.
Because Portugal had such a long coastline海岸线/ˈkoʊstlaɪn/, it was easy for the Portuguese people to build boats船只/boʊts/ and sail航行/seɪl/ them. One prince of Portugal, Henry亨利/ˈhenri/, wanted to use these boats for more than short trips. He wanted the Portuguese to learn how to sail farther than anyone else in the world. Prince Henry was the fourth son第四个儿子/fɔːrθ sʌn/ of the king of Portugal. That meant that he would never inherit继承/ɪnˈherɪt/ the throne, so he didn't need to worry about learning to rule Portugal. He could use his money and his time in another way—to make the Portuguese into great sailors水手/ˈseɪlərz/ and explorers探险家/ɪkˈsplɔːrərz/. Because of his love of the sea, Prince Henry became known as Henry the Navigator航海者亨利/ˈhenri ðə ˈnævɪɡeɪtər/.
Henry first began to think about building a fleet舰队/fliːt/ of sea-going ships when he was a young man helping his brothers fight in North Africa北非/nɔːrθ ˈæfrɪkə/. Henry's father had sent them down to North Africa to capture an important Muslim trading city. Merchants商人/ˈmɜːrtʃənts/ from Africa came to this city with ivory象牙/ˈaɪvəri/, gold黄金/ɡoʊld/, silver/ˈsɪlvər/, and salt/sɔːlt/. Merchants from India came with spices香料/ˈspaɪsɪz/: pepper胡椒/ˈpepər/, cloves丁香/kloʊvz/, and nutmeg肉豆蔻/ˈnʌtmeɡ/. In the Middle Ages, there were no refrigerators冰箱/rɪˈfrɪdʒəreɪtərz/, so people put a lot of spices in their meat. That way, they could eat the meat even when it started to spoil变质/spɔɪl/. The spices covered up any bad tastes! Spices were so important that pepper was almost worth its weight in gold.
But Muslim traders贸易商/ˈtreɪdərz/ knew that the Portuguese were Christians who had driven the Muslims out of their country. And as soon as the Portuguese took control of the city, Muslim traders began to avoid避免/əˈvɔɪd/ it! Henry realized that if the Portuguese wanted gold and ivory from West Africa西非/west ˈæfrɪkə/, they would do better to sail down the African coast and trade with the West African tribes西非部落/west ˈæfrɪkən traɪbz/ face to face. So he hired shipbuilders造船工/ˈʃɪpbɪldərz/ to build new ships that were fast快速的/fæst/ and light轻便的/laɪt/, perfect for exploring strange waters. He paid mapmakers制图师/ˈmæpmeɪkərz/ to draw new maps of the coastlines, so that sailors would know exactly where they were when they came ashore. And he built a school for navigation航海/ˌnævɪˈɡeɪʃən/.
Navigating导航/ˈnævɪɡeɪtɪŋ/ (following a map to a certain destination目的地/ˌdestɪˈneɪʃən/) is hard to do at sea, because there aren't any roads, trees, or landmarks地标/ˈlændmɑːrks/. So Henry's sailors had to learn how to read star maps星图/stɑːr mæps/ so that they could find the North Star北极星/nɔːrθ stɑːr/ and other important stars at different times during the year. They had to learn to use an astrolabe星盘/ˈæstrəleɪb/ (a special measuring tool) to measure how far the sun or the North Star lay above the horizon地平线/həˈraɪzən/, and then they had to be able to calculate计算/ˈkælkjəleɪt/ a ship's position from this information. They had to know how to use a compass指南针/ˈkʌmpəs/ (an instrument with a magnetic needle磁针/mæɡˈnetɪk ˈniːdəl/ that always pointed north). And they had to be able to calculate a ship's speed速度/spiːd/.
In the Middle Ages, sailors measured how fast a ship was moving by tying knots/nɑːts/ at regular intervals间隔/ˈɪntərvəlz/ on a long rope. Then they would put a piece of wood weighted with metal on one end of the rope and wind the other end up onto a reel卷轴/riːl/. As the ship sailed, the sailors would toss the wooden float off the back of the ship and turn over a glass which had just enough sand in it to run out in exactly one minute. They would let the rope unwind展开/ʌnˈwaɪnd/ while the sand trickled out慢慢流出/ˈtrɪkəld aʊt/ of the glass. Then they would stop the reel and count the number of knots along the length of rope that had unwound. This would tell them the speed of the ship. Today, a boat is still said to be traveling at "so many knots/nɑːts/."

Once Henry's sailors learned how to navigate through unfamiliar waters陌生水域/ʌnfəˈmɪljər ˈwɔːtərz/, they were ready to head south to Africa. But they were frightened害怕的/ˈfraɪtənd/. No one had ever sailed down the coast of Africa before. They called the mysterious waters that lay down south the Sea of Darkness黑暗之海/siː ʌv ˈdɑːrknəs/. They were sure that sea monsters海怪/siː ˈmɑːnstərz/ and whirlpools漩涡/ˈwɜːrlpuːlz/ lay in this Sea of Darkness. They were afraid that the ocean became so shallow浅的/ˈʃæloʊ/ that ships would wreck撞毁/rek/ on the sea's bottom. They were certain that strong currents洋流/ˈkɜːrənts/ would pull them off into nowhere, so that they could never return. And they thought that the sun down south was so hot that the seawater boiled沸腾/bɔɪld/ and roasted烘烤/ˈroʊstɪd/ men alive!
Henry tried to convince说服/kənˈvɪns/ his men to sail further south. He paid for expedition远征/ˌekspəˈdɪʃən/ after expedition. But all of his sailors were too frightened to go very far! Finally, after fourteen expeditions, a brave explorer named Gil Eannes吉尔·埃阿内斯/ɡɪl iˈænəs/ dared to venture冒险/ˈventʃər/ down into the Sea of Darkness. And he discovered that the water there was the same as the water closer to home. Gil Eannes set out on his adventure in 1434. In the years after his great journey, the Portuguese began to follow his example. They sailed further and further down the coast of West Africa to trade for ivory, salt, gold, jewels, ostrich eggs鸵鸟蛋/ˈɔːstrɪtʃ eɡz/, seal skins海豹皮/siːl skɪnz/—and slaves奴隶/sleɪvz/.
Although Henry the Navigator had hoped that his ships would find their way to India, he died before this could happen. You see, maps in the Middle Ages didn't show how huge巨大的/hjuːdʒ/ Africa was. No one had ever sailed all the way around the continent大陆/ˈkɑːntɪnənt/, so mapmakers couldn't draw an accurate准确的/ˈækjərət/ picture of Africa. And no one knew exactly how far they would have to sail to get around the tip of Africa. Some sailors thought that Africa might stretch all the way down to the bottom of the world!
