Chapter 25 - Alexander the Great / 第二十五章 - 亚历山大大帝
Philip and His Son /
If the Greek希腊的/ɡriːk/ cities had stayed friends朋友们/frɛndz/ and allies盟友/əˈlaɪz/, like they were when they fought战斗/fɔːt/ against the Persians波斯人/ˈpɜːrʒənz/, Greece希腊/ɡriːs/ would have been a strong强大的/strɔːŋ/ country.
But instead, Sparta斯巴达/ˈspɑːrtə/ and Athens雅典/ˈæθɪnz/ fought. They were like brothers兄弟/ˈbrʌðərz/ who were too busy忙碌的/ˈbɪzi/ arguing争论/ˈɑːrɡjuɪŋ/ with each other to notice that a bully恶霸/ˈbʊli/ is coming.
In this case, the bully was a king国王/kɪŋ/ named Philip菲利普/ˈfɪlɪp/, who ruled a country国家/ˈkʌntri/ called Macedonia马其顿/ˌmæsɪˈdoʊniə/. Philip noticed注意到/ˈnoʊtɪst/ that Athens and Sparta had become weaker更弱/ˈwiːkər/ and weaker after years of battle战斗/ˈbætəl/. And so he came down into Greece with his army军队/ˈɑːrmi/ and conquered征服/ˈkɑːŋkərd/ the Greek cities.
Now Philip ruled Macedonia and Greece. But he wanted even more cities. He wanted to sail航行/seɪl/ across the Aegean Sea爱琴海/ɪˈdʒiːən siː/ to Asia Minor小亚细亚/ˈeɪʒə ˈmaɪnər/ and take over the Persian Empire波斯帝国/ˈpɜːrʒən ˈɛmpaɪər/ as well. But before he could attack攻击/əˈtæk/ Persia, Philip died死了/daɪd/. And his son儿子/sʌn/ Alexander took over his throne王位/θroʊn/.
Do you know what the name Alexander亚历山大/ˌælɪɡˈzændər/ means? It means "ruler统治者/ˈruːlər/ of men人们/mɛn/." Alexander became the most famous著名的/ˈfeɪməs/ "ruler of men" ever. He was known by the whole world世界/wɜːrld/ as "Alexander the Great亚历山大大帝/ˌælɪɡˈzændər ðə ɡreɪt/."
Alexander had always been an unusual不寻常的/ʌnˈjuːʒuəl/ boy. Even as a child孩子/tʃaɪld/, he was strong强壮的/strɔːŋ/ and brave勇敢的/breɪv/. Nothing scared害怕/skɛrd/ him. When he was still a small小的/smɔːl/ boy, he went with his father Philip to look at a warhorse战马/ˈwɔːrhɔːrs/ that Philip wanted to buy买/baɪ/.
The horse马/hɔːrs/, a huge black黑色的/blæk/ stallion种马/ˈstæljən/ named Bucephalus布塞法洛斯/bjuːˈsɛfələs/, bucked暴跳/bʌkt/ and kicked踢/kɪkt/ constantly. No one could ride骑/raɪd/ him.
"He's too wild野性的/waɪld/," King Philip said. "I don't want him. I would never be able to manage管理/ˈmænɪdʒ/ him."
"I can ride him!" Alexander said.
"Nonsense!" Philip said. "You're too little小的/ˈlɪtəl/."
"But I can!" Alexander insisted坚持/ɪnˈsɪstɪd/.
"If you can ride him, I'll buy him for you," Philip promised承诺/ˈprɑːmɪst/.
Alexander had been watching观察/ˈwɑːtʃɪŋ/ Bucephalus carefully. He noticed注意到/ˈnoʊtɪst/ the horse kicked and reared whenever the sun太阳/sʌn/ threw his shadow影子/ˈʃædoʊ/ on the ground in front of him. Alexander thought that the huge stallion was frightened害怕的/ˈfraɪtənd/ of his shadow. So he walked fearlessly无畏地/ˈfɪrləsli/ up to the horse, took his bridle马笼头/ˈbraɪdəl/, and turned转动/tɜːrnd/ him so that he couldn't see his shadow.
Instantly, Bucephalus stood still静止的/stɪl/. He allowed Alexander to mount上马/maʊnt/ him and ride him around. Philip bought the horse for Alexander. And when Alexander became king after his father's death死亡/dɛθ/, the great black stallion Bucephalus always carried him into battle. He even named a city城市/ˈsɪti/ after his horse. He called it Bucephela!
Alexander had many opportunities to ride his warhorse into battle. His father Philip had conquered Greece, but Alexander had even larger goals目标/ɡoʊlz/ in mind. He wanted to rule Persia波斯/ˈpɜːrʒə/. The Persians had given up trying to conquer Greece, but their empire帝国/ˈɛmpaɪər/ was still the largest in the world. It stretched延伸/strɛtʃt/ all the way from Asia Minor to India印度/ˈɪndiə/. And Alexander wanted it.
When Alexander met the Persian army in Asia Minor, he used his cavalry骑兵/ˈkævəlri/—soldiers riding on horseback马背上/ˈhɔːrsˌbæk/—to push the Persians back. Asia Minor was now his. But could he conquer the rest of the Persian Empire?
According to one story, Alexander stopped at a city in Asia Minor and saw there, in the city's center, a chariot战车/ˈtʃæriət/ tied to its axle with a huge, complicated复杂的/ˈkɑːmplɪˌkeɪtɪd/ knot结/nɑːt/ of rope, larger than a man's head. "What is that?" he asked.
"That is the Gordian Knot戈尔迪之结/ˈɡɔːrdiən nɑːt/," the people told him. "We have a legend传说/ˈlɛdʒənd/ about it. The man who loosens解开/ˈluːsənz/ that knot will rule all the rest of Asia. But it is impossible不可能的/ɪmˈpɑːsəbəl/ to untie the knot. Hundreds of men have tried, and no one has ever succeeded成功/səkˈsiːdɪd/!"
Alexander studied研究/ˈstʌdid/ the knot carefully. Then he took out his sword剑/sɔːrd/ and sliced切开/slaɪst/ the knot in half.
"There," he said. "I have loosened the knot."
No one had ever thought of doing that before. But the prophecy预言/ˈprɑːfəsi/ of the knot came true. Alexander conquered all the rest of Asia. He went south into Egypt埃及/ˈiːdʒɪpt/ and was crowned加冕/kraʊnd/ the pharaoh法老/ˈfɛroʊ/ of Egypt. And then he came back up into Mesopotamia美索不达米亚/ˌmɛsəpəˈteɪmiə/ and took over the rest of the Persian Empire.

Now Alexander was king of more land than anyone else had ever ruled. He was truly "Alexander the Great"—the ruler of the largest empire the world had ever seen.
Alexander's Invasions /
When Alexander the Great arrived at the edge边缘/ɛdʒ/ of the Persian Empire, he wanted to keep going. He wanted to conquer all of India.
Alexander's army began to invade入侵/ɪnˈveɪd/ India. Alexander learned how to use elephants大象/ˈɛləfənts/ in combat战斗/ˈkɑːmbæt/. And his soldiers won most of their battles.
But the Indians who fought against Alexander were fierce凶猛的/fɪrs/ warriors战士/ˈwɔːriərz/ as well. Even though the soldiers from Macedonia won many battles, more and more of them died claiming these victories胜利/ˈvɪktəriz/. Finally, Alexander's army mutinied叛变/ˈmjuːtɪnid/. After a particularly difficult battle, in which over a thousand soldiers were killed or badly wounded受伤/ˈwuːndɪd/, the army refused拒绝/rɪˈfjuːzd/ to go any further.
"Be content满足/kənˈtɛnt/ with what you have!" they told Alexander. "We don't want to go on dying死亡/ˈdaɪɪŋ/ to make your empire bigger."
Alexander didn't want to stop. He stayed in his tent帐篷/tɛnt/, sulking生闷气/ˈsʌlkɪŋ/. He refused to see anyone, hoping that his army would change its mind. But the men were firm坚定的/fɜːrm/: They would not fight in India any longer.
He gave up trying to take over the rest of India. Instead, he put his energy精力/ˈɛnərdʒi/ into running the huge kingdom王国/ˈkɪŋdəm/ he already had.
Alexander wanted the people of the future未来/ˈfjuːtʃər/ to remember what a great ruler he was. And he knew that cities last for years and years. So he built new cities all over his empire. He named many of these cities after himself: Alexandria.
[原书插图:The Empire of Alexander the Great - 亚历山大大帝的帝国版图]
Some of these cities still stand today. Just as Alexander intended, they remind us that Alexander the Great was the greatest conqueror征服者/ˈkɑːŋkərər/ of ancient古代的/ˈeɪnʃənt/ times—and ruled over the hugest empire that the world had ever seen.
The most famous city called Alexandria is in Egypt. Alexandria was built near the Nile River尼罗河/naɪl ˈrɪvər/ and the Mediterranean Sea地中海/ˌmɛdɪtəˈreɪniən siː/, so that merchants商人/ˈmɜːrtʃənts/ could reach it easily by ship.
Alexander himself marked out the city's walls, but he died before he could see any of the city's buildings. But after his death, Alexandria became the greatest city in the world. Many famous scholars学者/ˈskɑːlərz/ and writers作家/ˈraɪtərz/ lived in Alexandria. It became a center for art艺术/ɑːrt/, music音乐/ˈmjuːzɪk/, and learning学习/ˈlɜːrnɪŋ/. Today, Alexandria is still a big and important city.
Just outside Alexandria was the biggest lighthouse灯塔/ˈlaɪthaʊs/ in the world. It was called the Pharos法罗斯灯塔/ˈfɛrɒs/, and it was 330 feet330英尺/θri ˈhʌndrəd ˈθɜːrti fit/ tall. Ships could see it from miles英里/maɪlz/ away. They used its light to sail safely into the harbor港口/ˈhɑːrbər/ of Alexandria.
Do you remember reading about the Seven Wonders七大奇迹/ˈsɛvən ˈwʌndərz/ of the Ancient World? These were seven amazing sights of ancient times. We learned that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Great Pyramid are two of the Seven Wonders. The Pharos is the third. No one had ever seen a lighthouse as large as this one.
The Pharos was destroyed摧毁/dɪˈstrɔɪd/ long, long ago. No pictures of the Pharos survive from ancient times. But only a few years ago, divers潜水员/ˈdaɪvərz/ found huge chunks of stone at the bottom of Alexandria's harbor. This stone may be all that is left of the Pharos.
The Death of Alexander /
Alexander the Great became king when he was only twenty. Most people today haven't even finished college大学/ˈkɑːlɪdʒ/ when they are twenty. But at this young age, Alexander inherited继承/ɪnˈhɛrɪtɪd/ a throne and all the responsibilities责任/rɪˌspɑːnsəˈbɪləˌtiz/ of a ruler.
It only took Alexander eleven years to spread his empire all across the ancient world. One story tells us that when Alexander was still young, he burst into tears眼泪/tɪrz/ one day because there was no more of the world left to conquer. He had already conquered it all.
What would Alexander the Great have done next? We will never know, because Alexander died suddenly when he was only thirty-two. He was planning on taking an expedition远征/ˌɛkspɪˈdɪʃən/ with his army when he began to feel weak虚弱/wik/. He decided to wait a day or two until he felt better. "Go ahead and make all the preparations准备/ˌprɛpəˈreɪʃənz/," he told his generals. "We will go as soon as I feel better."
But that day never came. Alexander got weaker and weaker. Finally, he was too weak to speak. His generals came to see him, but Alexander could only move his eyes. The next day he died.
No one knows exactly why he died. Some people think he might have been poisoned中毒/ˈpɔɪzənd/ by one of his generals who wanted his power. Others say that he probably died of malaria疟疾/məˈlɛriə/—a fever caused by mosquitoes蚊子/məˈskiˌtoʊz/ who carry certain kinds of germs细菌/dʒɜːrmz/. We will never know for sure.
Alexander's body was put into a glass coffin玻璃棺材/ɡlæs ˈkɔːfɪn/ and taken back to the city of Alexandria. The coffin was placed into a stone sarcophagus石棺/sɑːrˈkɑːfəɡəs/, there in Alexandria.
Alexander's generals knew that no one else could keep control of Alexander's large empire. Only Alexander could manage to rule such a huge kingdom. So they divided分割/dɪˈvaɪdɪd/ it up.
One of the generals took Macedonia and the northern part of Alexander's kingdom in Asia Minor. Another general, named Ptolemy I托勒密一世/ˈtɑːləmi wʌn/, took over Egypt. His family would rule Egypt for three hundred years. Ptolemy was responsible for finishing the city of Alexandria; he built a huge library图书馆/ˈlaɪbrɛri/ in Alexandria and filled it with books. A third general, named Seleucus塞琉古/sɪˈluːkəs/, took over the southern part of Asia Minor and Alexander's lands in Asia, almost all the way over to India. The descendents后代/dɪˈsɛndənts/ of Seleucus were called the Seleucids塞琉古王朝/sɪˈluːsɪdz/, or the Syrians叙利亚人/ˈsɪriənz/.
Now Alexander's great empire had become three separate kingdoms, with three kings fighting for power. Alexander had brought a very brief time of peace和平/pis/ by uniting different cities and nations into one country. But that time of peace was over. Alexander's three generals and their descendents would spend the next hundred years fighting over control of different parts of Alexander's old kingdom.
